Conference Theme: Developmental Education: Back to the Future
The 2009 SWADE annual conference will be held in in Phoenix, Arizona.
A Message from Robin Ozz, President-Elect
I am really excited for the upcoming conference in Phoenix, AZ, November 4-6. All is coming together to make this a stellar event.
The conference begins on Wednesday, November 4th at 5:00 pm. with appetizers.
At this event, you may pick up your conference materials as well as meet new
colleagues and catch up with colleagues whom you haven’t seen for a while.
Twenty-four 75-minute workshops are planned over the two days.
Sessions include themes on topics of specific interest to developmental educators:
classroom methodology, assessment, retention, technology, and teaching developmental
mathematics, writing, and reading. Dr. Hunter Boylan, as our keynote speaker, has
prepared a memorable address to our conference attendees. In addition, this year
we will continue to have “best practices” sessions as an option for conference
participants on Friday afternoon. Roundtable discussions on topics of interest
to developmental educators will be held. This is an opportunity to share ideas,
synthesize the conference experience, and network with your colleagues in a more
informal setting.
The Hotel Phoenix City Center is amazing in both its amenities and its location.
We hope your stay in Phoenix will be an enjoyable one. I look forward to seeing "old" friends and meeting new friends at the conference. Can’t wait!
A Message from Amy Schwebke, President
As my term as President of SWADE comes to a close,
I'd like to thank all the SWADE board members for
their hard work and support. Thanks to Suzanne
Harris-Smith for continuing her duties as Secretary of SWADE.
I'd also like to thank Victoria Gonzalez from Doña Ana Community
College for volunteering her time to SWADE, as her tenure in the
role of Treasurer ends. Too, my appreciation goes out to Mark Glines,
past-president of SWADE, for his efforts as a member of the Executive Board over
the past three years. I'd especially like to thank Robin Ozz, who through her
wonderfully steadfast leadership, promises to offer us a first-rate conference this year.
SWADE's 2009 Fall Conference will be held in Phoenix, Arizona on November 4, 5 and 6.
In case you were not aware, SWADE has a terrific website. Check it out at
http://www.swadeweb.org. Thanks to Ali Ahmad from Doña Ana Community College
in Las Cruces, New Mexico for setting up the site, and for maintaining it.
If you have any ideas for additional information that should be included
on the website, please let me, Robin, or Ali know about them.
Finally, the SWADE board has been working on revising the SWADE Officers Handbook.
Our goal is to prepare future officers of our organization for upholding the SWADE
tradition of excellence in professional service and development, as well as upholding
our good standing as a chapter of NADE. Because of our good standing with NADE,
we’ve continued to receive NADE support in the form of chapter grants and we’ve been awarded
a free membership to NADE for some lucky SWADE member. So, remember that service to your
professional organization ensures its continued success. I will have the Officers Handbook
ready for posting by the time of our November conference.
We currently have two individuals up for the officer roles of SWADE President-Elect
and Treasurer. First, Carla Kulinksy, from Salt Lake Community College, is running for President-Elect.
Carla has taught Developmental Education classes at Salt Lake Community College for over 20 years. While her
emphasis has been teaching mathematics, she also teaches Learning Enhancement (a college success course).
Carla earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from the University of Denver, a Bachelor’s Degree
in Mathematics from the University of Utah, and a Master’s Degree in Mathematics from the University of Utah.
She has served on various committees at SLCC, including curriculum, commencement, hiring, textbook selection, etc.
She was a board member of the Utah Association for Adult, Continuing, and Community Education for several years,
having served a term as President for that organization. For at least 10 years, she has been a member of SWADE.
Carla has done a great job of helping her students learn and succeed in and out of the classroom. In fact, she has
been honored as a recipient of a Teaching Excellence Award by the Salt Lake Community College foundation. Carla is
the mother of two wonderful children – Leah, a college student and proud wife of a Marine, and Trevor, an active high
school teenager who loves playing lacrosse.
Next, Kim Dillivan, from Northwest College in Powell, Wyoming, is running for Treasurer.
Kim grew-up on a farm in central Iowa. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in
Agricultural Business at Iowa State University. Kim’s Master of Science degree came
from the University of Wyoming where she majored in Agricultural Economics.
She received her Ph.D. in education from The University of Tennessee.
Kim currently teaches at Northwest College in Powell, Wyoming. Before arriving at Northwest College,
Kim was an Assistant Professor at Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau. At Southeast
one of Kim’s teaching roles was in the University Studies Program. Kim taught an economic systems
course and First-Year Seminar.
Please cast your vote via e-mail (I’m sending this out to the list Robin has been generating
announcements through) to Mark Glines at Salt Lake Community College. Mark’s email address is Mark.Glines@slcc.edu.
The deadline to cast your vote is Tuesday, November 2, 2009.
In closing I'd like to thank all members of SWADE for their support of this organization. I hope to see you in Phoenix!
